In celebration of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12th at 3PM, we are delighted to present two of South Africa’s most promising young pianists in our “Rising Stars” series at Shed and Silo Country Restaurant – Heinrich Sutton and Chanda Lupambo.
Heinrich Sutton (17) hails from Pretoria and currently studies with Megan-Geoffrey Prins. He recently won 1st prize at the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition, in addition to being awarded special prizes for best performances of a Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach, a classical sonata, a virtuoso etude, a South African composition, as well as the best 3rd round recital. Heinrich also won 1st prize at the Atterbury Piano Competition in 2023.
Amongst works by Beethoven, Schumann and Rachmaninoff, Heinrich will also be performing Chopin’s popular Fantasie-Impromptu, as well as Smetana’s rarely heard Fantasy on Czech Folksongs.
Chanda Lupambo (18) hails from Stellenbosch and currently studies with Nina Schumann. He recently won 3rd prize at the Hennie Joubert Piano Competition, 2nd prize at the Johann Vos Competition, as well as the prize for most promising pianist at the National Youth Music Competition in 2022.
In addition to Haydn’s Sonata in B minor, Chanda will be playing the beautiful Quejas o la maja y el ruiseñor (The Maiden and the Nightingale) from Goyescas by the Spanish composer Granados, before finishing his programme with Rachmaninoff’s Sonata no 2 in B-flat minor, op 36 (1931). This monumental work, one of the last great Romantic piano sonatas, was originally composed in 1913, before being greatly revised in 1931.
