On Sunday, December 8th, at 3 PM we welcome to Shed & Silo Country Restaurant the celebrated musicians Chris Vale (baritone) and Eugene Joubert (piano) as they present The Bar on the Piccola Marina, a musical tribute to the great Noël Coward.
South African baritone Chris Vale has dazzled audiences with his powerful voice and stage presence. A graduate of the University of Pretoria (cum laude) and winner of the Mimi Coertse Bursary Competition, Chris’s operatic debut in 2007 as Papageno set the tone for a dynamic career. He has excelled in roles like Schaunard (La Bohème) and Leporello (Don Giovanni), and expanded into musical theatre, portraying Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. His 2021 solo album Come Away earned two Afri-Indie Awards, and his work with the award-winning Vox Chamber Choir underscores his versatility as both performer and vocal coach. Recent highlights include Schubert’s Winterreise, Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony, and Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem. Co-founder of the Legato Choral Festival, Chris continues to elevate the choral and operatic scenes with his artistry.
Eugene Joubert has proven himself as a collaborative pianist of note. Having graduated with a master’s degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music (Houston, TX) in 2009, Eugene made his US debut during the Conservatory Project at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. in May 2007. Notable international performances include those in Denmark, Switzerland, Czechia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia. Locally, Eugene has appeared at the Wakkerstroom Music Festival, Toyota US Woordfees, Vrystaat Klank en Klassik, Aardklop, and the St Francis Music Festival. He also performs for the Lowveld Chamber Music Association, the Mzansi Chamber Music Collective, and the Stilbaai and George Music Societies.
Join baritone Chris Vale as he channels the wit, charm, and sophistication of Noël Coward in The Bar on the Piccola Marina. Accompanied by pianist Eugene Joubert, this dazzling cabaret-style revue invites you to revel in the glamour of Coward’s world while exploring timeless classics by musical greats Ivor Novello, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and George Gershwin.
Through Coward’s signature humor and unforgettable music, the afternoon journeys from the frothy joys of high society to the tender ache of unrequited love, all set against the allure of glamorous soirées and exotic locales. Featuring iconic numbers like “Mad About the Boy,” “Begin the Beguine,” “Glamorous Night,” and “I Got Rhythm,” this performance is a sparkling tribute to one of the 20th century’s greatest entertainers.
